Status report

It's a hot Monday morning and the heat's getting to me, in contrast to the past week when cool temperature pervaded because of rains brought by Linfa (which just left the Philippine area of responsibility). It's been more than a week since I left QC and I'm quite content here at home. I eat regularly (i.e., 3 meals a day at the right times), I could cook some fare for breakfast (usu. egg with tomatoes and onions), lunch or dinner or assist in making them (I'm clueless about cooking for the most part so I need this exposure). I've also tried baking a failed lengua de gato, a popular sweet food from Baguio, and banana-cinnamon oatmeal cookies (yum! everything's gone and I wasn't able to take a picture). I tried to exercise my composing skills when taking shots using our Canon IXUS. I have access to a daily newspaper, and yesterday, I was able to read a lot of opinion columns in the Philippine Star. There's also a DSL connection here so I could surf anytime. I was hooked on Facebook before I came home because of the myriad of quiz apps available. Now, I'm constantly checking it because of MafiaWars (RJ actually got me curious because he coaxed me into making an account at Tagged so that I could join his Mafia there; now he set up a Facebook account so that he could play FB's MafiaWars which is a little bit different from the one at Tagged.

So one week or so flew by net-surfing, eating, reading Mills and Boon romances (they're my Mom's), trying to cook, sleeping late, getting up by 7 in the morning (it's only been three times since I've gotten up later than this), taking nature-themed pictures such as plants, flowers (the ordinary kind) and some common animals here (like cat and snails), discovering that we have sources of malunggay and calamansi in our own yard on top of sili, atis, guava and saluyot, and sweeping the house everyday. There were other things I had planned to do before I came here. On top of these was enhancing my Spanish and German writing and speaking skills. Then I planned to write regularly, something like on a day-to-day basis. Talking with my parents soon after I got home brought the pressure to start earning so one of my immediate objectives was to find a work I can do from home. I can't say I'm fulfilling all three satisfactorily but I'm putting myself on a schedule starting this week so I can fit all three on top of my daily activities. My problem is when I'm online, I don't immediately get to do what I'm supposed to do. Surfing about also shows me many things I'm interested in so my time in front of the PC lengthens. I ought to make a list of things to do before I go online and stick to it, then accumulate more tasks for the following surfing sessions. But sometimes, it's just easier to give in to impulse. *sigh* Oh yeah, because of those activities I planned to do, I thought it would be a good practice for me to manage my time since I really suck at it.

I also told myself I'd be more informed about, and if possible, more involved with this country's affairs and international issues.

One downside of staying at home is my lack of physical activity (and I mean the running around/competitive type which I could do with Sikad when I'm in QC). I don't know of any who play here and I certainly haven't seen or heard of anyone playing the sport in our city north of NCR. There's no space here where one could really jog around and for awhile, floods have claimed our lawn so there's no space to play basketball or badminton. I've watched two games for the Asian qualifiers to the 2010 World Cup and I envy those countries because they have the pride to send their national teams to vie for a place in that tournament. Hopefully the Philippines reaches that position in the next five years.

That's all the time I've got for today's musing. Will work on my to-do list and shcedule, then cook milkfish for since lunchtime's approaching. Ciao!

Gretchen Rubin: 13 Tips For Actually Getting Some Writing Done

Posted using ShareThis

Stumbled upon this at Ma'am Libay's blog. It's a nice and interesting read. One of my objectives during my bum stay here at home is to write anything from personal journals, essays or an occasional short story/poem if I could. One of the suggestions in this list is to write everyday, and I do agree. I've tried a go at it during the last week of May, then somehow I stopped. Energized by the new look of this space, I'm determined to write everyday.

New look

I've just about finished tweaking the new look of my site. Replacing the template means all the widgets I've put in before with their respective contents would be lost and I don't think there's any way I could just copy and paste them from my old template onto the new one. So there, almost complete.

I actually wasn't supposed to do a major overhaul on this one; it was my other blog that I was supposed to change the appearance. I've no idea yet on how to work around CSS so my only recourse was to look for free downloadable themes. I was actually becoming excited about it since there were plenty of cool themes that are downloadable. There are also a lot of cool hacks available for wordpress users so I was actually thinking of making that new one my main blog. anyway, I've already downloaded my theme of choice, trying to sneak around the admin page to find out how to install it, and even looked at tutorials. the truth that i won't be able to use those came crushing down on the site's forum. only the themes available there could be used: those awesome downloadable themes and cool hacks could only be applied if one's using the software wordpress.org. oh, well...

then just tonight, the idea seized me again to change the look of this blog once again. i browsed thru some of those offered on one site and when i found this theme, i knew this was it. I love the feel of the theme and the pizza image just added to the appeal. It's like a breath of fresh air that's just right for my current pursuits. So i'm saying goodbye to the old look (which by the way, is the same theme that KaPete is using - actually got the idea from him). For keepsakes - here's the blog in the old theme:

I've removed the shoutbox from the new layout. And the layout just seems to make the site look clean unlike before (observe the many lists on my sidebars). the Blogger navbar is also invisible by default. However, the recent posts widget won't show up, and the ShareThis button I've installed is also invisible. Gotta look into it soon. For now, I'm glad I found this template.

Sunday (June 14) rundown

Been at home since Thursday. Karen and Kevin left yesterday, a day which we thought was Fathers' Day because the priest greeted the padres de pamilya at the end of the mass. I've continued watching Boys over Flowers and 1 Litre of Tears - I'll be watching both series' episode 6 next.

I also got to do a YM conference with Ice and Jajo yesterday. It was a nice talk. Ice is a clinical instructor (CI) at Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) this sem. Jajo is going to complete is cases at San Carlos City. We might get to meet this Saturday.

O yeah, because we thought it was Fathers' day yesterday, RJ and I bought 3 regular De Luxe pancit and a mocha roll cake from Janas. Imagine our laugh when we realized that the actual celebration is not until the coming Sunday.

I still haven't played the piano nor the guitar, the latter because I was not yet able to tune the strings. I was also trying to tune up my wordpress theme awhile ago but it turns out I cannot use any theme other than those provided in the site. It's a pity because there are a lot of awesome themes available for wordpress.org users.

I've started reading the German book I brought home with me. I've finished 3 chapters yesterday. I should plan this activity so that I can also move forward with learning Spanish.

wordle me

Tried out wordle.net and got this:

it surveyed my page and based on the frequency of the words/numbers i used (since i haven't removed any words except the common and, at and the), it churned out this image where the frequency of use is reflected on the relative sizes of the words in the image. fun!

Pinoy talent makes it in Cannes

A Filipino is named Best Director at the Cannes. Yes, it is the Cannes and not something else.

I do agree with Richard that this event, indeed, is a happy day in Philippine cinema, besides the three other Filipino films in the same competition. I'm not much of a film geek since I haven't gone beyond plot and aesthetics to appreciate a film - though I believe I have some more sense regarding my choices for filmviewing than most (yes, that's the ego talking) - so I know I won't be able to appreciate some of the indie films produced today, notwithstanding Mendoza's. But this victory speaks much of what Philippine cinema has achieved. And to think this film was up against the works of Lars von Trier, Almodovar, Campion and Tarantino (they're the only directors I've heard of before now) I do hope to be able to watch and appreciate this and many other films produced today, since this period can indeed be the Golden Age of Philippine Cinema.

ranting somewhere in philcoa

Eyes hurting, eighty-peso dinner gobbled down in less than 20 mns., yellow lights flickering in my eyes as the multi-propellered ceiling fan tries to keep me cool.

staring at the pc monitor for 9 straight hours isn't something i'd gladly do but i'm doing it through my own fault. i'm putting myself and ma'am djanna into a lot of pressure rushing the writeup of my thesis like this when i've had two whole sems and the start of the summer term to write it. i've never worked well planning things ahead, or doing things ahead for that matter. Papers photocopied and pdf files downloaded semesters ago only got to be read now, less than a week before final manuscript submission and it's not like it's very easy to do a writeup and look for supporting data in other references when the data you obtained seem quite out of the ordinary, the expected trends were not there. and the data changed from one phase to the next. and i'm not really sure how much to assume, and how much to keep searching in the world wide web. does it surprise you that i'm writing this on paper? well, i am a bit surprised. i can't believe i'm still writing, like i can still churn out ideas on paper. it's been a long while since i've last written my ideas on paper. and it's been awhile since i've written anything this long so my hand is kinda hurting.

why are Filipino TV networks so intent on fueling the stupidity and prejudice that already abound? i've at for less than an hour in front of the boob tube, switching the channels from one station to another. this was around 6-7 pm on a sunday evening. many families would be at home, kids watching whatever's on tv unguided. TV says: it's right to make fun of fat people, of who they are and what they wear; it's good to make fun of gays, and make them do ridiculous things for the rest of the TV-watching public to see. Why do you make kids do antics on TV and frighten them while doing it, all the while catching the whole thing on tape? Why twist public service announcements so that the public including kids could laugh at them? why make kids act like adults, delivering lines which would not benefit you or them, teaching kids watching that it's alright to be like them and do as they're doing. The Waldorf style of teaching is right: television should not be viewed by kids...

Hmmm... I gues i've had enough ranting. my eyes want to go close already. one more thing. there has been so many online communication tools already, different sorts of RSS readers, twitter/plurk, and many others i don't know about: del.i.cious, diggit, stumble. i tried seeing what twitter was all about. was tempted to create an account for a bit. but then i'm not online all the time. and for me to fully make use of it, i have to subscribe to other users using it. that'll add to the tons of things i read on the net or the other things i have to do when i'm online. maintaining an online presence is not very easy. but i'm in [it already]. it'll be hard to get out of it. so there, i think i need to sleep already.

Rundown of events of the past month (and some things I want to remember)

March 14 (5 am) to March 15 (6 am) - Marj Darunday's thesis shoot - was part of the PD team, got to do clapper roles, as well as edit log notetaking, jao mapa was there, and there was a highly-charged scene that proves how actors can be so talented

March 28 – futsal tournament at DA – 3rd out of some teams

March 29 – Weekend Futbol League – FC Sikad vs. Oscariz FC; played D during 2nd half

Apr 1 – Macel and her nephew Gabe played with us at Sunken; afterwards went with Macel and Joyce to Gabe’s grad party and his grandma’s bday party at their place in Loyola Hts – love the baked seafood dish and the mango cake (which joyce said she preferred less, but which she ate with relish over the strawberry cake nonetheless)

Apr 5 – UP ORG Batch Party – appeared as Katja, the original Palaboy (haha), met Romeo Lee and saw other mems go gaga over the videoke and what-have-yous

Apr 7 – enrolment for summer

Apr 10 – went home

Apr 14 – came back to UP for urgent talk with thesis adviser

Apr 17 – Jack Daniel’s Music Tour Philippine Leg at NBC Tent with the killer collaboration of Cynthia Alexander and Nyko Maca – great performances from other bands including Corporate Lo-Fi (new favorite), Razorback and Urbandub (yes!); also ran into Angcoy, an old high school friend, and his friends, one of whom was Alex Medina, brother of the famous Ping. We drank some Jack Daniel’s courtesy of Vivian N. Limpin, who had a VIP pass (yahoo!) and Angcoy, who treated me to two glasses (the drinks and food there were way pricey)

Apr 18 – met with Joyce at Trinoma after coming from Peri and had a long, insightful talk about the complications of life (mine, mostly)

Apr 19 – Joyce and Macel were at the Tour of the Fireflies (I had wanted to join, but plans interfered), and instead, I was with the Sikad team for the Corinthians’ futsal tourney at Club 650; got eliminated, but was a good experience nonetheless

Apr 22 – first time to eat at Le Coeur – liked the mini-baguet, treat by Macel

Apr 24 – Ariel came by the house (impromptu, I guess) and we ended up watching Wong Kar-Wai movies (Chungking Express (yay!) and Happy Together – he said Kaneshiro Takeshi was gwapo (which he really is, till now), and I agreed with him when he said Tony Leung Chiu-Wai was gwapo during this certain scene) and talking about his lovelife (and whatever goes in between)

Apr 25 – watched Happy Together because I didn’t understand it when Ariel was here, mainly because he was making kwento; I love the shots, and the messages of Wong

Apr 30 – ate Klur treated me to dinner at McDo

May 1 – played football again after a long while as D (really an exhausting job especially since there were only two of us besides the keeper protecting our goal most of the time), then went to the wake of Ate Ria’s mother

May 3 – went biking with Joyce and Macel – from UP to Xavierville at Ricky Lee’s home to meet with ate Vivian Limpin, to Sta. Lucia, to Village East at Ana and Peter’s home (where we ate twice – lunch and snacks – and watched two movies – Wolverine (the copy was still in the post-production stage) and Vantage Point; and I’m reminded why kids are good to have around), to Libis, to Katipunan, then to LB and finally depositing the bikes at Sonic (at around 6), we went home tired and in need of rests and baths to which, I woke up the following day sore in the arms and around the bottom butt area because of sitting long in the bike seat

In between all these – I’ve watched Daria Season 1 which made me miss it so I’m looking forward to watching other episodes at youtube; Bokura Ga Ita (at first, it seemed like a fairly simple love story, but after marathoning some episodes last night, it surprisingly has a lot to say about love; a few Bleach episodes – still a long way to go before the final battle for the Hogyouku; Antique Bakery – besides the yaoi hints and actual scenes, interesting subplots for each of the characters; finished Princess Hours (the ending was kinda rushed and a bit plain if you take everything that’s happened over all the other 25 episodes), still watching Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya; started on 1 Litre no Namida (promises to be a tearjerker); read the Secret History of the Pink Carnation, some kinda historical fiction during Bonaparte’s time like the Three Musketeers; reading Middlesex, absolutely engaging and the allusion to the gods of Mt. Olympus is fun/imaginative and has me wondering how the Greeks have changed from then to now; saw Kuya Jug once when he visited after being in Osamis for quite awhile already

March 23 playlist

March 23

Monday, March 23, 2009

all these things that i've done

1. Thinking that watching one episode of Princess Hours is beneficial to hasten the easing up of your toothache before you get started on what’s needed to be done
2. Becoming engrossed as to when the cold, arrogant leading man starts to show his affection towards the cute, unconventional leading lady, who has been trying to find her place within a love square the whole while, and still watching even though you know it’s formulaic and there’s no ending you’d expect other than happily ever after
3. Marathoning Princess Hours from 2 AM to 11 AM
4. Sleeping a lot to make up for the pagpupuyat over the marathon
5. Concocting stories in your head while awake and not doing anything
6. Reading White and Strunk’s Elements of Style
7. Rereading stuff you’ve written and consciously trying to apply what you’ve learned so far out of #6
8. Attempting to organize music library
9. Attempting to organize computer files
10. Reading fiction published online
11. Discovering good music in your vast WinAmp music library
12. Learning how to use the different functions of a Canon Ixus 80 IS by reading the manual and then applying what you’ve read to practice
13. Playing Dynomite, Solitaire and Hearts on the PC
14. Looking for a certain Korean movie on the net unsuccessfully, but other movies caught your attention in the process, so you ended up watching the first part of one movie you found intriguing
15. Watching another part of Nodame Cantabile Live Action Special Episode 2, since the whole thing’s divided into 8 and you’ve only watched up to the 4th
16. Creating a new playlist on Imeem
17. Downloading a song and uploading this and other songs to Imeem since it doesn’t carry the versions of the songs that you want
18. Finding out at last how to be able to get a mp3 copy of a song you wanted but don’t have a source of, and doing this not only to that one song but also to a number of songs from the same band and other bands as well
19. Recalling my previous blog entry and noting the mistake I made – and conscientiously going about to correct it
20. Contemplating why the behavior of a certain someone annoyed me big time
21. Thinking of the time when I can finally do all of these stuff that I want to do
22. Writing down this list with the intent of posting it in your blog
23. Continuously being on the lookout for items to add to this list, and when writing additional items, meticulously checking the style and grammar.

All these I’ve done for the past three days, starting Saturday till about 7:40 pm tonight. These over what? Oh come on, it’s just the thesis. Right. So I’ve got to stop this now and start working. I can feel Ma’am Djanna putting pressure on me to submit the other parts of my thesis already. So yes, aja! I can do this. Mind over matter, baby. Will stop all this nonsense and submit a decent RRL or R&D tomorrow.

3rd of March thoughts

'twas the 3rd of March... Had a lazy day, thought I owed it to myself. Ended up finishing Twisted V so that I could return it to its owner. It was the last article in that book that gave me something to think about. It seemed like a fitting thought since that day was something like a self-evaluation day of sorts. And it's what I've been thinking about for quite some time already, since, you know, i'm nearing my quarter-life crisis (am i not having one already - the crisis, not the quarter-life thing - still a few more years to go before that). And you know, it's time I did something out of my life already. It's not like i'm not doing anything; it's more about me becoming more proactive about my life sometimes. hell yes, I'm usually just waiting for things to happen, drifting, going with the flow. Yes, years still ahead. Things to do, things that can be done. Everything's totally up to me. I can do anything. "Nothing is impossible." It's just the perennial mind over matter battle in our heads. Anyway, the article was about the movie Logan's Run so there's something about Sandmen in the article.

halaw

seeing "compromise" on a positive light

"Early on, from my father, I learned the necessity of compromise, which to me has never been a bad word. It makes things happen, it makes things possible. It is, in its own way, an art, a working of one's attitude and skill on the material and situation at hand. We often look at our heroes as those who never compromised their principles, and that's admirable, but not all principles are created equal. Some involve the survival of the nation, others merely the survival of the self, which is important enough on most days, especially if the survival of others depends on you."

- Sir Butch Dalisay, For Love and Living

May saya at mayroong dusa
Sa mithiing pakikibaka (?)

kapag umikot na ang buwan
bago pa sumikat ang araw
bagong pag-asa'y matatanaw
tadhana na ang syang pupukaw

si julio at julia
kambal ng tadhana
di susuko
sa pagsubok

newly-discovered song by Alanis

We all had our minds made up for us
We had to believe in something

Es regnet.

Es regnet.

++

A face change for my blogspot site. Got bored of the almost colorless interface it's been in for quite awhile. Amazingly, my cbox account seems to have gotten deleted or lost or something. Couldn't access it anymore to change some settings on my tagboard. It recognized my username but i've got no emails whatsoever on my new password.

++

The rain has stopped.

++

Been in a writing mood for the past few days already.

++

++

++

nakakain na rin ako sa bellini's. sa Marikina branch na nila 'to. inaya ako nina joyce at macel last night for dinner, supposedly, at a thai restaurant in marikina. andun na sina ate beng and dylan. i was determined to decline kasi masakit na mata ko (from puyat and staring in front of the pc for almost the whole day beginning the other day). then treat na lang daw. ayun, went with them. when we were on the way, closed na raw iyong thai resto so we proceeded to bellini's. ate beng and dylan already had dinner so they just had dessert and tea at the italian resto instead. macel ordered spaghetti with seafood baked in aluminum foil, pasta with prosciutto for joyce and me and campagnola (pizza). masarap! masarap talaga. kailangan maulit. there were breadsticks provided nung una which we (the three of us) devoured since past 9 na iyon and we haven't eaten. we even asked for seconds and even thirds pa ata. then they gave shots of sweet wine for each one of us. the owner (my companion presumed he's the son of the owner who's at the cubao branch) was trying to get our opinion on our dining experience so we also got to take a picture with him. and those pictures - since they're in macel's cam - have the possibility to no longer see the light of day. so, well, i'll just imagine bellini's through my memory.

++

it's almost three. need to leave. will futsal myself along with other sikad peeps. ah yes, and something that would pass for lunch.

miss writing. but not like this. like something else. like in estupadoink.blogspot.com or other. anyway, need to go now. like you would care.

++

[edit: 022509]
P.S. somebody posted the pics of which i was speaking above. teehee.
so we have the gang at Bellini's: seated-beng, joyce, macel, I; standing - owner, dylan

high on Murasaki Blue

summer haze takes me back to those golden days
a black and white photograph
a captured moment of your laugh
sunny days eating ice cream
while i'm lost in the daydream
lingering seconds as our lips did part
did you really mean what you said at the start?
you made me laugh in your own ways
getting twited in the part with the happy mondays
i'm standing here with hardly anything to say
words just only get in the way
there's so much passion that we consumed so fast
how do i make that first kiss last?
i wanna go back to the eyes
the eyes that don't lie
murasaki blue
you were always true
i wanna go back to the start
where i was touching your heart

Teenage mutant ninja turtles
Teenage mutant ninja turtles
Teenage mutant ninja turtles
Heroes in a half-shell
Turtle power

They’re the world’s most fearsome fighting teens
(Hey get a grip)
When the evil Schredder attacks
These turtle boys don’t cut no slack

Splinter taught them to be ninja teens (He’s a radical rat)
Leonardo needs Donatello’s dust machine (Not so fast)
Rafael is cool but crude (Get a break)
Michelangelo is a party dude

Nakaka-miss talaga ‘to.
